ICBiotech-Osaka University Visit
On December 15-16, 2011, professor Rodriguez, CENG director and GSH executive director, visited the International Center for Biotechnology (ICBiotech) at Osaka University, Osaka Japan. Professor Rodriguez's host was professor Kazuhiro Fujiyama, chair of the Applied Microbiology Laboratory at ICBiotech. Professor Rodriguez made a presentation to students and faculty entitled: Diet-Genome Interactions: An Example of Multi-Scale Biology and Cross-Kingdom Regulation." Professor Rodriguez also met with graduate students and staff to discuss the various research projects at ICBiotech. Research at the Applied Microbiology Laboratory focuses on the production of recombinant pharmaceutical proteins in yeasts, insect cells and plants. Their research focuses specifically on the genetics and biochemistry of protein glycosylation in heterologous expression systems. The Lab employs knock-out and knock-in technology to manipulate glycosylation pathways in these hosts to produce safer and more effective recombinant proteins.
